PHARMACY STRATEGY: Embrace Equity

#EmbraceEquity

This is the theme of this year's International Women's Day (IWD) and should be part of your organization strategic plan to embrace.

Equity and equality are inherently different concepts. "The IWD 2023 #EmbraceEquity campaign theme seeks to get the world talking about why "equal opportunities are no longer enough" - and can in fact be exclusionary, rather than inclusive."

  • Equality means each individual or group of people is given the same resources or opportunities.
  • Equity recognizes that each person has different circumstances, and allocates the exact resources and opportunities needed to reach an equal outcome.

"People start from different places, so true inclusion and belonging require equitable action."

Check out the links below to see useful images that visually show the difference between equity equality and equity.

A quote that brings it home for me is "Equality is giving everyone a shoe.  Equity is giving everyone a shoe that fits."

CAREER DEVELOPMENT:  Network Groups

I have participated in and also started a Lean In Circle program in my prior health systems.

They have been instrumental in my own development and the women involved.

If you are not familiar, these programs stemmed from the famous Ted Talk and book by Sheryl Sandberg "Lean In helps women achieve their ambitions and helps companies build inclusive workplaces where women of all identities are supported and empowered."

I have loved these groups and do see huge benefits for women to have 'private' conversations about the challenges and opportunities we face.  But, I have often reflected on the need to ensure I am networking with diverse groups.  Diverse groups that include men in addition to these women focused groups.

For my entrepreneurial path I did consider whether I would focus on supporting women only or all pharmacy professionals.

I landed on supporting a diverse population and enjoy that my CONNNECTORx Leadership Circle membership for career development and practice advancement is diverse. And I am happy to say it is diverse not just for gender but for other diversity that adds to the richness of conversations and support.

What do you think about this and what type of network groups are you in?

FUN & JOY:  Bingo

Bingo game cards that allow you to get to know others through casual conversations can be great for team building.

The following bingo card designed by Teambuilding.com for International Women’s Day encourages players to learn more about the women they work with in both personal and professional contexts.

"First, give each employee a Bingo card. Then, plan a time to play altogether. Participants will chat and ask questions, and will mark off a square every time they meet a female colleague who meets the criteria. Or, you could also give out cards in the morning and urge coworkers to chat with each other throughout the workday."

 Enjoy.
